All I Want - Joni Mitchell

Most young people should remember the Counting Crows' version of Big Yellow Taxi featuring Vanessa Carlton. (remember her? from A Thousand Miles and White Houses? No? Well maybe you should click the links so you can hear those songs and understand where I'm coming from... Kapeesh? Kapeesh.) Ok, so anyways, that was a cover of Joni Mitchell, I found out. I looked it up, and found this video of this quirky girl singing and needed more.

I want to be her friend.

Come Around - Marc Broussard

Sorry, I couldn't find a video with the studio version, but this is the best live performance I could find quickly. Anyways, Marc Broussard is so soulful, I feel my soul blow up like a balloon when I listen to him. I want to just walk around and talk in that raspy deep voice for the rest of my days.

To make up for the lack of a studio version, I'm linking to another one of his songs, Hope For Me Yet.

Troubles Will Be Gone - The Tallest Man on Earth

Another track of which I don't know it's origin in my life. I love the oldy-feel to this music. Here's another one of their tracks, Burden of Tomorrow.

This was the free single of the week on iTunes sometime in the past. It became one of the top played songs in my collection. 'nuff said.

Indestructible - Robyn

I also forget where I first heard of Robyn, it was a long time ago. She started with some ok pop tracks, but recently she has been cranking out seriously hypnotic tracks which go with the pop music's turn towards dance club music. But hey, whatever the reason behind her new style, it's still ear candy, plain and simple.

The Cure For Pain - Jon Foreman

I know many people know the band Switchfoot, but I don't know how many know how many people know of the four EPs the lead singer, Jon Foreman, released; he made one for each season (and I love the album art for the whole collection). Not many of the tracks stood out to me, but I have played this one a lot, so I thought it deserved some notice.

Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) - Kelly Clarkson

Ok, so I love Kelly Clarkson. Don't be hatin'. When I first listened to her new album, I heard her first single, Mr. Know It All, and I thought it was ok. Then I heard THIS song, and I thought, "this is your meal ticket for this album, Kelly." Flashbacks of Since U Been Gone fly though my head. Then she releashed Stronger as her second single, and I thought, "Ok, she warmed is up with Mr. Know It All, now she's gonna kick ass with this single." Then I saw the music video and was thoroughly disappointed. I'm sorry Kelly, I love the song, but this VIDEO??? A fan dance video is for a single following a highly successful single, not the single everyone's talking about. Make a video with a great story for the official version, and if the fans want, they will definitely make a fan dance video for you, no charge. OK, GOOD. I got my rant about this video out into the internet.

For the Widows in Paradise, for the Fatherless in Ypsilanti - Sufjan Stevens

I first heard of Sufjan Stevens (the "j" in Sufjan sounds like a "y." I started saying his name with a hard "j" sound, and now I can't help it. Then I remember the right way to pronounce it and feel stupid) through his song, To Be Alone With You.

I loved this song, that I looked him up and listened to his whole discography. He is a main part of the music I listen to, and he will most likely appear on this blog dozens of times. If Sufjan ever sees this blog post, thank you, and keep making music!!!

(Still A) Weirdo - KT Tunstall

From her Black Horse & The Cherry Tree fame to now, KT Tunstall has released 3 class act studio albums I have enjoyed immensely. She makes great tracks for chilling. I often find myself swaying back and forth in a pile of pillows while listening to tracks like Someday Soon or Silent Sea.

World Spins Madly On - The Weepies

Oh my, where do I start with the Weepies? My favorite band ever. I love every single one of their songs, that it's hard to choose one for this post. I think this is one of their most widely known tracks, but who knows? I've listened to them so much, that I can know what song it is within the first strum of the guitar (no one has tested me, this may be a hyperbole...) I'll just post links to a few of my favorite songs by them so you can make your own opinion:

Nobody Else's Problems - Jay Everett Band

One night, my friend and almost next door neighbor Grace brought me to a cafe to see this band. I was not expecting much, but I fell in love with them right then and there. They are amazing live, even on that tiny stage. I bought the album that night, the first physical CD I ever bought, and I've gotten a lot of use out of my purchase. I'm satisfied.

P.S. One song they played that night was not on the CD, but I loved it so much. Fortunately, I found it on Youtube!

I have no idea how I found Andrew Bird, but I'm glad I did. He has a great sound that sometimes frightens me, but I like a little fright in my life.

This may be a long post, but it's my first real post, so I may need to just vomit a bunch of songs out right now to give this blog some weight in my mind. I'm just going to go into my iTunes and see what songs pop out to me at the moment to give you a taste of what I like.

Theme - Jon Brion (from Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)

Of course, I will need to first post my #1 played song (is it #1 because it's a short song?). I love Jon Brion's music, and I hope you go search for more after you see this post. I find him very quirky and whimsical, and find him great when I'm in a daydreamy kind of mood (a mood I am found in most often). Although I first heard the song in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, I first was turned on to the genius of Jon Brion when I saw his song performed on So You think You Can Dance. I'll post a link to the performance:

Jose and Allison - Contemporary

After I saw that, I found everything I could find by Jon Brion to get a feel for his music as a whole.

Breathe Me - Sia

I always liked this song, especially when I saw the stop-motion Polaroid video that accompanied it. However, I really fell in love with it when I saw the series finale of Six Feet Under. I don't want to ruin anything about the show, so go watch it in its entirety and then we can talk. Seriously, go watch it. Click the link, you'll see on IMDb that it's rated 9.0/10. Seriously. WATCH IT.

Threnody - Goldmund

I found this song through an awesome video I found while surfing YouTube:

I found this a great song to listen to while creating art with a melancholy mood. It's also good for just relaxing and staring at the stars or something. Do with it what you please.

When I saw the title, I wondered what it meant, so, I obviously googled it. It turns out that a threnody is "a song, hymn or poem of mourning composed or performed as a memorial to a dead person." That definition made me listen to the song in a whole new light.

Intro

So I have been consuming a lot of media lately, and thought it was about time I started a blog. I always flood my Facebook with links to animations, short films, music, and youtube videos. I try to post the best I find, trying to be a curator of the Internet. Hopefully, I will take this blog seriously and actually post often.

Hopefully I can keep this area of my internet life reserved for quality material instead of the tornado of internet noise I experience on a daily basis. Granted, I definitely enjoy internet memes and videos of people falling down, but let's keep it classy, shall we? Or maybe I'll have a Sassy Slacker Saturday for all you with trashy class (shout out to our favorite trash-classy queen, Ke$ha - when does her new album hit shelves?)
